Growing a pineapple at home is a fun and rewarding gardening project. Not only do you get a beautiful tropical plant, but you might also end up with a delicious fruit!
Step 1: Choose a Healthy Pineapple
Start by buying a fresh, healthy pineapple from the store. Look for one with firm, green leaves and no brown spots.
Step 2: Remove the Crown
Grasp the body of the pineapple with one hand and the base of the leaves (the crown) with the other. Twist firmly. The crown should come off with a small stalk attached.
Step 3: Prepare the Crown
Peel off the lower leaves to expose about an inch of the stalk. You might see small brown bumps; these are root primordia waiting to grow!
Step 4: Plant the Crown
You can root the crown in water first or plant it directly in soil. For soil planting, use a well-draining cactus or citrus mix. Plant the exposed stalk in the soil and water lightly.
Step 5: Care and Patience
Place your pineapple plant in a bright, sunny spot. Water it when the top inch of soil feels dry. Pineapples are slow growers; it can take 2 to 3 years for a plant to produce fruit, so patience is key!

This is a fantastic guide! I tried rooting a pineapple top last year and it failed, but I didn't know about exposing the root primordia. Thanks for the tip!
You're very welcome, John! Removing those lower leaves makes a huge difference. Let us know how your next attempt goes!
Great video embed! Visuals always help me understand the process better. Can I use a regular potting mix if I don't have citrus soil?
